Jute is an environmentally-friendly fiber derived from a tropical plant. These fibers are spun together into strong threads that can be used to make rugs and mats. Not only does this fiber make high-quality rugs, it is one of the most affordable natural fibers on the market - the same fiber is used to make hessian bags and twine.
The majority of jute is produced in India and Bangladesh. In their raw, undyed state, the fibers are a shade somewhere between off-white and brown. Jute’s color and high cash value have earned it the nickname “the golden fiber.” It is second only in production to cotton as the world's most popular textile.
Jute is best suited to indoor spaces where it will not be exposed to moisture. If wet, the fibers can release natural oils and stain the backing material of the rug or surrounding materials. It is susceptible to mold and mildew. Blot any spills and hang dry to clean. Vacuum regularly with the beater bar removed.
Some jute rugs are blended with different fibers while others are 100% jute. PlushRugs has a vast assortment of jute rugs to choose from.
