Transitional Rugs

Transitional rugs typically have a traditional characteristic to them with a contemporary edge. For example, a transitional rug may retain the floral motif and intricacy of a Persian rug while using a brighter, more vibrant color palette. You may also see a change in pattern scale. So instead of seeing small intricate flowers, the floral motif may be re-imagined in a larger pattern where only a handful of simple floral shapes are on the rug.

Regional traditions are also changed in transitional rugs. The typical floral patterns used in Persian or Turkish rugs may even be substituted for other horticulture patterns such as ferns or cherry blossoms that are not typically associated with those regions. Transitional rugs that are influenced by Mandarin culture tend to feature bamboo, orchids, and other Asian flowers, but with simple ornamentation. You might find an almost retro-style repeated plant pattern, or a borderline-modern bamboo forest, done in hot new colors.

Transitional rugs can also put a spin on theme rugs such as Oriental, Navajo, and Tibetan designs. Navajo rugs, for example, are sometimes considered too repetitive to work with some décors and Oriental rugs are often thought to be too dense, dark, and overly ornate. The southwestern pattern of the Navajo rug can be updated with new colors and overlays while the Oriental rug can be given a lighter tone and more open pattern making these rugs perfect for any room.

As much as transitional rugs put a modern twist on traditional rugs, they also put a traditional twist on modern rugs. Having a tendency for collage and using a broad range of colors, they give a fresh feel to the popular modern rug designs. If you have been a little afraid to use a dramatically colored “pop-art” rug, consider a transitional rug which will give you the flair of the contemporary rug while regulating its audacity with traditional sensibility. Because of their versatility, they are considered the “go-anywhere” rugs that can complement any room. Transitional rugs can make the shift between rooms with different design elements easier on the eye. The right transitional rug for you is bound to be out there and they can add style and charm to your home or office.
