Inspiration for the Karastan Shapura collection:
For much of its history, 'Peshawar' - known in Ancient times as Purushapura - was one of the main trading centers on the ancient Silk Road and a major crossroads for various cultures between the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia. In recent years, the name 'Peshawar' has become famous for a style of carpets that imbue a rustic, yet sophisticated elegance. Karastan has captured the essence of this free and easy style in the Shapura rug collection, by artfully combining colorations that area remarkably gentle - as though worn by the sands of time. Rugs from the Shapura collection are woven in the U.S.A. of premium fully worsted New Zealand wool. Each of the yarn colors used in creation of these patterns have been individually skein dyed for superior clarity, woven through the back and luster washed to create as closely as possible the look and feel of the magnificent hand knotted rugs that inspired them.

Karastan has been a rug innovator since 1928. American retailer and textile manufacturer Marshall Field built a loom capable of recreating the detailed craftsmanship of a hand-woven rug. From the moment the first Karastan came off the loom, the Karastan name became synonymous with elegant machine-made rugs that rivaled their handmade counterparts. The Story Began in 1928. In a North Carolina mill during the 1920’s, Marshall Field & Co. created an exciting and innovative product – machine-made oriental design rugs of high quality at realistic prices. These elegant new rugs, almost impossible to distinguish from imported originals, were introduced by Wanamaker’s New York department store in 1928, and the Karastan brand was born.
