Karastan rugs had humble beginnings. During the 1920’s, in a small mill in North Carolina, Marshall Field & Co. started making their own high quality oriental style rugs. They met their goal of making rugs indistinguishable from true oriental rugs. Since they first started selling out of a Wanamaker’s NY department store in 1928, Karastan has grown into an industry leader in elegant area rugs. Although their roots are in Oriental rug design, Karastan has also expanded into the world of transitional and contemporary rugs.
Karastan’s Antique Legends collection is based on some of the most renowned rug designs in history. The dyes used to color the rugs are specifically blended to mimic the vegetable dyes used centuries ago. These are not replicas, however; they are more like traditional rugs with a slight contemporary twist. They are made from the highest quality wool.
The Exotics collection contains rugs with animal hide prints. These rugs brandish beautiful patterns from savannah animals and they are made from Karalon nylon which gives them added durability. They are also treated with Scotchgard Protection and Stain Release which insures a longer lasting rug.
The Panache collection is the more contemporary corner for Karastan. Some have geometric patterns and bright colors while others have large scale floral patterns in browns and greens. The green, red, gold, and grey color palettes really grab your eye and make for a beautiful focal point. To ensure the rugs are both soft and durable, they are made on a Van De Weile loom using nylon. These rugs are soft under foot and also have the durability and colorfastness that only a synthetic fiber can provide.
