Probably the hottest trend in area rugs, as well as other flooring, is the use of “Green” or sustainable materials. Rugs made from natural materials have become very popular over the last few years, and will continue to be popular far into the future. Natural Materials

● Jute is a rain-fed crop with little need for fertilizer or pesticides. The Jute fibers are considered eco-friendly and are 100% biodegradable and recyclable. These rugs are not normally dyed due to the beautiful natural coloring of Jute fibers.

● Seagrass is found all over the world and has been noted as having a fresh grassy scent. When woven into a rug, it is highly durable and spill resistant. Seagrass rugs are rarely dyed due to the varied and beautiful natural colors of Seagrass.

● Hemp is very fast growing and sustainable. It requires no pesticides or herbicides. Because of this, it is considered an extremely eco-friendly plant. The fibers are strong and durable, and make for a very long lasting rug.

● Sisal is an agavae that yields a stiff fiber. No pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used on this plant. Most weeding is typically done by hand reducing or eliminating the need for herbicides. Sisal rugs are long lasting and hard wearing.

● Wool is a renewable, biodegradable fiber made from sheep fur. It is able to be dyed any color. Wool rugs are great for cold concrete or wood floors. They are soft and keep your feet warm in the winter. Wool’s ability to be dyed allows it to be used in all styles of rug.

Style

When looking for a rug style, you really need to look at your current decor, and try to match that. A light color palate with modern furniture and clean lines will probably be accentuated best with a modern or contemporary rug. Color

Color popularity change from year to year. This year, yellow, moss green, rich oranges, greens, greys and blues are very popular. Earth tones are always a safe choice and will almost always accentuate an existing color palate.
