Displaying Rugs on the Wall
July 19th, 2010
Rugs are often thought of as a floor covering, but they can also be displayed on the wall as works of art. Because of the cost and beauty of many of the rugs we sell, many people choose to hang them on the wall, rather than placing them on the floor. For centuries rugs have been hung on walls in palaces, museums and the homes of royalty alongside other works of art and paintings.
When displaying the rug care needs to be taken in choosing the right rug. Most rugs can be used for a wall hanging but the lighter rugs are easier to display. If the rug is too heavy then the carpet will be strained over time and lose its shape.
Displaying the rugs in the right location in the house can enhance its beauty, and in the right light it will bring out the design of the rug. Hanging the rug on the wall will allow it to be fully appreciated while protecting it from everyday wear and use if it were on the floor.
To hang lighter weight rugs we recommend obtaining a dowel rod from your local hardware store. Cut it to be a few inches longer than the width of the rug. Then sew a strip of fabric across the back of the area rug, across what will be the top when hung. The goal is to form a pocket for the dowel to fit into. Then secure hooks into your wall at both sides to set your dowel on. A curtain rod may also work well for this task.
To hang a heavier weight rug, follow the procedure above, except cut the fabric strip that you will be sewing onto the back of the rug into 2 or 3 pieces leaving a gap between each when sewing on. This will allow you to use more hooks to hold the rug. Be sure to get the fabric securely stitched onto the rug before attempting to hang.
