Traditional Rugs

Traditional rugs are based on designs originating in Persia, China, Iran, and Turkey. These designs can be traced back as far as 7,000 BCE. Traditional rugs also became very popular in Europe during the 13th century largely due to Marco Polo whose travels to Turkey exposed him to ornate carpets and rugs which he brought back with him. During the Renaissance, these traditional rugs were a sign of high class and social status. The patterns in these rugs were often depicted in paintings as well.

These rugs are often characterized by bright, bold colors including shades of orange, red, and teal. However bold and bright the colors typically are, they usually have complementary colors that blend well together. Many of the patterns are reminiscent of nature and are often paired with large borders that use geometric motifs. This contrast of intricate nature motifs and geometric shapes makes for a stunning design where the center of the rug really pops out at you. There are also many traditional area rugs with damask or paisley patterns that are rather ornate and fanciful. Because these patterns are so beautiful they are often times hung on the walls of a home as display pieces.

While these ornate patterns can add visual flow and focus to a room, not all traditional rugs have the complex patterns mentioned above. There are many varieties of traditional rugs that have a more simplistic design that can fit into a room that already has strong patterns. The use of complementary colors in the rug makes it a relatively easy home décor addition and even if your home has a striking color pallet, a traditional rug should still fit right in.

Like any other rug style, there are a number of natural and synthetic materials that traditional rugs can be made from. Silk is often used to accentuate the luxury of a traditional rug. Silk traditional rugs today are a status symbol for the wealthy. The most common material, however, is wool because wool is durable, comfortable stain resistant, and inexpensive.
