Wool Rugs

Wool is the most common material used to create area rugs for many reasons. Wool rugs are beautiful, durable, and an all-natural alternative to rugs and carpets made from synthetic fibers. For centuries, people have been creating beautiful and unique wool area rugs, and now, thanks to Plush Rugs, obtaining wool rugs has never been easier, or more convenient.

Why should you choose wool for your area rug? There are many reasons, including:

Stain Resistance: Wool is naturally stain resistant due to the fact that each individual fiber is coated with a membrane that naturally repels water and stains. This keeps color contaminants from penetrating deep into the pile of the carpet. Wool can usually be cleaned with simply a vacuum, wet rag, and a little elbow grease.

Durability: Feel free to place a wool rug in an area of your home with heavy foot traffic. Wool rugs are able to retain their original shape much longer than other types of rugs, for the same reason that they are naturally stain and water resistant. Each strand of wool, in addition to being coated with a protective membrane, is also curly and acts like a spring. This means that even in high traffic areas, wool rugs naturally spring back into place.

Health: Wool is naturally hypoallergenic and has been shown to actually act as a natural air purifier by absorbing common household contaminants from the air (such as formaldehyde), deep into the fibers of the rug. Because it is naturally water repellent, wool rugs, unlike other types of carpets, do not support the growth of mildew. Wool also acts as a natural insulator, providing warmth in the winter and providing year-round humidity control. Also, due to wool’s lower rate of flame spread, low heat release, low heat of combustion, and the fact that it does not melt or drip, wool is the most flame resistant of all the textile fibers.

With so many benefits, it is easy to see why a wool area rug is such a good investment. Browse our wide selection of wool rugs today. I'd really like to order a sample of the G-5070 wool rug but it is on back order. What are my options if I don't want to wait that long. I don't want to have to send the largest size rug back if it doesn't work for me.

Dawn,
I see that there is a 2x3 size available for the G-5070 rug. If the swatch is unavailable, many people order this size to use like a sample, as the return shipping is still very inexpensive. Also, if you would like for me to get a return shipping quote for the larger rug, from your zip code back to the warehouse, I would be happy to do that as well. Just let me know.

The feel of wool is not universal. Wool is known to be soft but there are varying degrees of quality. I've also found the amount of wool making up each fiber makes a difference too. The larger the fiber, the less soft it is. For these reasons, if you are considering a wool rug it may be best to order a sample first so you are not disappointed. Or ask customer service, Some synthetic blends are softer then wool plus they are cheapter.

My advice to those looking for a wool area rug, is to know how long the nap of the carpet is before ordering, I have ordered a wool rug before that was not very thick, and it just wasn't very soft, but the longer fiber wool rugs are much softer

I still have a wool rug from ten years ago. It requires vacuuming, care, and rotating, but it is still in great condition.

There are some wool rugs that don't shed. Now they are the only ones I get. It is just so disturbing how much of the fiber comes out over the years. You wonder how there is any left!

IMO wool is the best way to go. I have owned probably 10 over my lifetime and they were just nicer than the other materials. I recently bought one that was blended with "art silk" and it was beautiful as well.

I have a wool rug under my dining room table and it has held up for I think 8 years under there. It vaccuums up easily and hasn't gotten any stains on it. We love it.

I ordered a wool rug just over a year ago and it has held up pretty well, but one area of the rug started looking thin. I had taken care of it properly like spot treatment and vacuum as recommended. Came to find out I had not been rotating the rug and that corner was getting walked on many times a day. I was told by the Plush Rugs staff that the normal life of a wool rug that is tufted is 3-10 years. So don't forget to rotate your rugs, it will make a difference

Are the wool rugs holding dye well or will they bleed on my wood floor?

PR

Traci with PlushRugs.com - 2 months ago

Clair, Wool holds dye very well and our rugs should not bleed onto wood flooring. I would caution you about one thing though, If you have recently refinished your floors, especially with any polyurethane finishes, I would caution you against laying any rug down for at least a couple weeks. Finishes that are still settling are more likely to absorb dye. If you haven't refinished your floors but would like to be extra careful anyway, rug pads will put a barrier between the rug and your floor while also adding cushion and keeping the rug from slipping.

My first rug was an inddor/outdoor rug, so when I got a wool rug I was so happy with how soft it feels. The material makes a BIG difference!

I realized a good tip to help advise people thinking of buying a wool rug. I have only owned wool rugs over the years and grew to understand the shedding is normal. Then I replaced one with a rug that was hand-knotted. It does not shed. I was happy but initially puzzled. Then I realized all my previous rugs were hand-tufted so it sheds more than my new one where the fibers are knotted together. I hope this helps anyone thinking of buying a wool rug. It really is the best material available for rugs.

Gerard,
Thank you for sharing that. Experience is the best teacher! You are correct; when the wool is knotted it will not shed as much. Hand-knotted rugs are also very durable, and when cared for properly can last for decades.

Is it common for wool to shed? I received my wool rug and it's shedding quite a bit. I've had wool rugs before and have never had this much of an issue with shedding. Do you have any recommendations on how to prevent this from happening?

PR

Aubrey with PlushRugs.com - 2 months, 3 weeks ago

Kari, it is common for wool rugs to shed. The shedding should dissipate over time. I would say after around 5 vacuums the shedding in your wool rug should get a lot better. Please let us know if you are still seeing this shedding problem after a few vacuums.

Theo - 3 months, 2 weeks ago

Im wondering about durability. I know your site says that wool is durable but how does it do compared to other fiber? And is it good to get a mixed rug or all wool?

PR

Traci with PlushRugs.com - 3 months, 2 weeks ago

If you are concerned about durability, Wool is almost always your best option. It is much more durable than the other natural fibers and more robust than synthetic. When a rug has mixed materials, it is usually in order to gain the benefits of both. For instance, wool/viscose rugs are often created because wool is especially strong and viscose is not. But viscose can add a shiny and textured element that wool could not. If durability is your main concern, I would still look at the 100% wool rugs.

I have a rug in my bedroom that is wool and I have had it 3 years and it is still in one piece and looking good. And it's super easy to clean. I am looking for a new rug for the family room and I will be sticking with wool.
